1981 Leonard Catalog Model 40 info request |

|
Would anyone happen to have an '81 Leonard catalog around? I am interested in the description of the Model 40 and also the published weights of the 40-5
and the 40-6. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,
Information I have is a bit earlier, but it might be useful for comparison. From my 1974, 1975 and 76 Leonard catalogs, the model 40 was referred to as from the Ausable Rod Series. The Model 40 is an 8 foot, 2 section with two matching tips. The rod is listed as 3 7/8 to 4 1/8 oz. and suggested line is 6 wt. All 3 years have the model 40 with downlocking butternut reel seat. The 1974 and 75 model 40's were wrapped with the traditional deep red tipped with black. The 76 model 40 seems to be listed as wrapped with tan windings. The Model 40 is described as a slower, medium action rod. The model 40H 8 footer for 7 wt was referred to as the Yellowstone series in 76 and was described as a slightly heavier taper for larger flies and rivers. There was also a 40L from the Letort series ( my most favorite and respected home state trout stream) described as a lighter and more delicate 5 wt. that I'm sure Vincent Marinaro and Charlie Fox approved of. Kenny, thanks for the effort. I believe this is one of the tapers that Maxwell tweaked when he came to Leonard. I suspect the '81 Model 40 is a different
animal than it was in the mid seventies. Again, thanks for your help. Sean

As best I know there wasn't a 1981 Leonard catalog as such. There were (I believe) only 2 catalogs issued during Maxwell's tenure at Leonard. The
first was published in 1979, the second in 1982 or '83. Depending on the year, the catalogs were sent out with updated price lists.

slw, thanks. I suspect that my rod is an '81 or '82 DF. I am trying to determine if it is the 40-5 or 40-6 and was hoping to do so based on the
published weight. Mine weighs 4.1 ounces. I have been told it is the 40-5 but it feels pretty dead with a DT-5 until I get about 25 - 30 feet of line out.
Thanks again.

The model #, action, and recommended line weight should be written on the shaft above the hook keeper. Beyond that I can only offer the
suggestion that you've got a keeper and should enjoy it with whatever line suits you.

Actually I bought the blank from Ron Kusse who told me that the blank was an '81 40-5 (not built at Leonard but by Ron).

I have a 40-5wt, it comes alive with 5 feet of line out, and then proceeds to deliver to 60 feet with little effort. The rod lays out a straight line with freakish control. -P |

Not all DT 5 WT fly line are the same, Peales which are you using ? and when did you buy it ?
The bottom line is every rod needs to find the right line that brings it to life in your hand. |

I probably have most of them: The early postfire catalogs with the Currier and Ives images or Leonard at the work bench, The Leonard catalogs of
Mills/Simroe dated on their covers. The last Simroe catalog of 1978 with the reel seat cover. The Big Brown Cover catalog (?1979), the small Leonard flier
catalog that had rod prices of Nov 1980, a small mailing for the centennial 1981 rod complete with photo, the H.L. Leonard visage catalog, and the gray Foster
Catalog. I think that there was one more, but I had enough when I was collecting them for flyrod identification and history along with the Leonard Lines
newspapers and a few other mailings that they sent out.

The action of the rod I have would have to be described as medium-slow. It can be fished as a medium with a snappier technique, and the rod still performs well
using higher line speeds. It's a versatile rod; and given its action it can still throw tight loops at slow speeds, it will also lay-out long leaders (15
feet including tippet). Its also one of the best rods that I have for throwing any type of curve-cast, open or tight, close or far.
Jaybird posted the specs on this rod some time ago. It is on my A-list, for tapers, and I will probably use this taper for the next rod I build. The 5wt DT line that I am currently using is a Rio Selective Trout. With regards to the varieties of 5wts there is indeed a great deal of difference, that said, this rod would still 'load' with any of them waaaaaay before 25-30 feet. I have the following 5wts in rotation, the Rio-ST, SA-XPS, SA-GPX, SA-Trout, and Cortland 444SL. -P

Peales, mine is a different animal altogether. Very stiff butt to a fine tip. "Tippy" action. It lays out a beautifully straight and deadly accurate
20 ft and upward line but getting out to that point is a bit of a pain. I had a WF 6 on it yesterday and it felt sluggish but it did handle the shorter casts
better.

Sluggish is not so good, especially if the tip feels like its some sort of waisted appendage. I knew of a 39 like that once. You might find success with a
'heavier' 5wt, like SA-GPX. -P

I have the Maxwell 40 in 5wt. and 6wt. Hunt the serial number are 8111 on the 5 and 8113 for the Hunt. both tubes have the catalog cuts taped to them.
I like the hunt for really throwing a WF rocket taper. Phil |
