I've learned quite a bit from reading this forum and appreciate all that I have learned from everybody. I hope, sometime, to be able to return the favor in some small way.

I've been lurking and learning for some time. Now that the "kids" are grown, I am about to indulge myself with a bamboo rod. I suppose that I
should feel guilty.

Welcome.
Now that you are thinking about buying, it's time to start trying. Find a gathering or builder near by and cast some rods. Figure out what you like and go for it. But.... Bamboo fly rods are addicting!! Pete |

Welcome, Mark!
My most fervent recommendation, in considering buying a first bamboo rod, is to "cast before you buy." You'll save lots of time and money that way. I'm a very hobbyist maker in Lincoln. Usually have maybe a dozen tapers laying around - you're welcome to come down and cast them sometime. That's a very small sampling of all the tapers available to you, but it can really help you start to figure out what kind of taper is suited for you. There's a maker in Des Moines, Pine River Rods. Also, 2 cane-maker gatherings you should know about: Southern rodmakers gathering, in Mountain Home AR every October, and Colorado rodmakers reunion outside of Glenwood Springs CO in july. Both meetings are a great place to go, to learn about rods. Lots of makers, HUNDREDS of rods to cast, but also guys like yourself, who don't make, but appreciate cane. An internet search should get you info on all the above. Email me at Info AT bamboonets.com if you'd like to come down and cast a few rods sometime. All the best, Lee |

Mark,
The dates for the 2008 Southern Rodmakers Gathering are October 23-25th You can find the info on Southern Rodmakers Gathering in Arkansas here.... http://www.southernrodmakers.org/ The website has not been updated for this year yet. The committee who puts together SRG also does the Colorado Gathering that just ended so they are catching a collective breath and should update the SRG website soon. Dennis

Mark;
As you no doubt have realized by now, there is a LOT of expertise/experience on this board - take advantage of it. I have only been fishing bamboo rods for 3-4 years now, a baby in comparison with some of our senior members (respectfully stated) and they know answers to questions we don't even have yet. What a wonderful and helpful group of people. You have already been given the best advice that could be given to someone new to bamboo - cast before you buy. There are rods out there that cost thousands that will not match your casting style and would be next to worthless (at least to enjoy) to you; there are also rods out there that are bargains that might well match your casting style perfectly and would be enjoyable for you to use regularly. I'd absolutely take Lee or others up on an opportunity to cast a variety of DIFFERENT tapers and styles. And, if you can, definitely check out the Southern Rod Gathering this October. You'll have a blast - I certainly did. Welcome to the "family." fisherman and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman."
