None here... but interesting... | #1 | ||

Waterworld2,
I regret I cannot give you any info about the man, or rods, you seek. However, there has been lively discussion on "twisted" rods on the rodmakers' list and I have never understood the fascination. i assume you are his great-grandson?? Anyway, I wish you luck, and do find them interesting. Very ornate rods, with agate guides throughout?? Hmmm... I would assume if he made rods for people, including a president, there would be a better record of his work, But, that's only an assumption. Treasure what you have, keep his work alive... which is what you are doing and I commend you. Best of luck, Mike St. Clair |

Yes I am his grandson, unfortunately he passed away when I was only three years old. There are a handful of rods that were left for family members. I have
found one person who actually had one of his rods a few years back. I also see one recently sold on Ebay but I could not find out to who, or how much or its
condition.
My mother got a copy of a very old newspaper article which describes the materials he used, and that he sold them for $75.00 a piece, a great deal of money during the depression. The article also mentions he had attempted to obtain a patent for his process however found that Divine had already secured one. I have a transcript of the article on the way to me. Judging from the pictures we have showing the number of rods in process there must be several out there somewhere. He did not just make fly rods using the twist method. I have a pristine unused fly rod, a deep sea rod, a surf rod, and a bass rod all were twisted. As I stated I give little credence to the family tradition that he made one for a president. It is my goal to give him the recognition as a craftsman that he was and to provide a history of him in the event someone does come across one of his rods. Dave |

Jim Adams has or had an Olin twisted fly rod in his most recent catalog; listed as damaged and not for fishing. His description included some on Olin and
I'm sure he knows more than that.
