Posts: 258 07/02/2008 22:33	Tags : None Well, I'm weaving my way back across the US after a nice week or so with Ron Kusse in Washingtonville, NY. Had a great visit, and, as always, learned a few new tricks from one of the old masters of this art. Kinda miss Ron and his humor already, but I also miss being in my OWN shop working on things I need to get finished! Saw a lot of great sites, and got turned on to some hidden streams that aren't in any of the books! GREAT little brookie and brown trout streams that nobody fishes or even stops to look over. Kusse and I even discussed buying a building sitting on one of these little gems in the Catskills, but then we contacted the realtor and found out that the present owner KNOWS what a gem the little stream is, and priced his property accordingly! Well, people in this hotel are waiting to use the computer, so i'll log off and give more details when I get back to my home and my shop. Bob R.L. Nunley Rodmaker

Posts: 260 07/23/2008 05:41	Brian, It's a sight to watch Ron move around his shop and do things that most makers consider "tedious" tasks with such ease. I guess when I have made as many rods as Ron, then most things will seem ordinary to me, but I just can't imagine that right now. Ron is now 74 years young and moves almost as good as I do. Of course, those who know me, know that I don't move as well as I should to be in my 50's... what's that old saying??? "If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself". I have to be honest, outside the shop, driving the mountains and seeing the sights, he wore me out!!! I was dead tired by the time I left his house. As usual, after my visit, I spent all of my working capital on MORE shop improvements, tools, etc., but well worth it to ease the work load a little in the shop. When I first leased the current shop, I thought I'd NEVER run out of room. Now, I'm thinking, "Just another couple of hundred square feet..." Got home with some very nice Thuya burl (one of my two favorite woods) and a lot of new knowledge. Funny how after 20 years of doing this, you think sometimes that you've figured out every aspect of making rods, then a week in Kusse's shop and I've found that while the learning curve isn't as steep as it used to be, it is still there. I guess it always will be. I've always said that when you think you know everything there is to know about any craft, there will always be someone that knows more. I know Ron knows more and I deeply appreciate his willingness to share that knowledge. Hopefully, this coming fall or winter I'll be making another trip to upstate NY to work with Ron for a couple of weeks in his new shop in Cape Vincent, NY. Hopefully, I'll be able to extend that trip and pick Bob Taylor's brain a little while I'm there. Fingers crossed!!! Bob R.L. Nunley Rodmaker

I've met a coupla guys that really connected with me in this sport... and its a joy to spend any time with them, no doubt. Them older guys eating 3 frowned upon now squares back in the day possibly had a pretty good diet.. go figure. To quote you - I've found that while the learning curve isn't as steep as it used to be, it is still there. I guess it always will be. Truer words have been spoken.. but its always a good day to hear them again. I have always been one to try harder to better myself amongst other of equal or greater knowledge... it started young when I was playing baseball... those days were fun and they lasted me a while.. but then my first trout ruined me after that.
