I pulled the leader out to check the tippet and the line to leader butt connection then put the Reel away; everything seemed fine with the conditions I was checking on.. Took it back out a few hours later to change the tippet because I'd learned we would need a finer X than I had on. Found the tippet was now buried under the line, along side the inner side of the spool ... must have happened when i was rewinding it to put it away. Not the 1st time I've had this happen Sometimes the end portion of the Tippet can be pulled out with tweezers etc but more usually requires the spool be removed from the frame and the Line peeled off until the Tippet section is finally freed up. Kind of like a "Birds Nest" on a bait caster but it looks neat and tidy on the surface, until you try to find the end of the tippet material and then discover it is buried. Note: the Tippet is below the line, on the side of the spool, NOT entangled in the gearing or over the side of the spool between the spool and the frame. Not a problem with the Reel ... it is "Operator Error" but I can't figure out what causes it. Ever happen to you?

Posts: 16 07/29/2008 18:35	You should be keeping the line taut while you're reeling it in, but when you get to the leader, i let it hang free and reel it in. That way the narrow leader and tippet don't bury themselves in the line.

Posts: 315 07/29/2008 18:37	Mr. riverfloggin is right on! Also, I leave about 4-6" of tippet hanging down rather than reeling all the way up. It still fits in the reel case just fine, and is easy to find the next time I take the reel out for fishing or to grease the line.

I tend to keep pressure on the line AND leader during the entire re-wind process. The more I think about it the more I realize ... the "cause" probably happens less when actually fishing than when "Lawn Casting" or just fiddling around at the Bench; because, in both cases I tend to put more pressure on the entire length of the Leader/Tippet than when actually astream. And, in thinking about what Seattle said .... the "Buried Leader" happens about 18-24" back from the end of the Tippet, not at the actual end of the Tippet ... all the more reason to think I am probably winding it on too tightly. Posts: 22 07/29/2008 20:46	Tie a quick loop at the end of the tippet and hook it over the reel foot so you don't reel it in all the way. I had a good fish break off when the line jammed from crossing over itself due to reeling the whole tippet in. Now if I do reel everthing in I run the entire line and backing onto another reel and wind it back to make sure that I don't cross and jam anymore. It takes some time but that's one thing that WON'T go wrong again when I'm fighting a fish(there are plenty of other things to take it's place).

Posts: 914 07/30/2008 06:13	Riverfloggin's got it. I always take the leader/tippet off the reel after use, unless the butt is attached to a Leader Link. In that case, I take off just the tippet.

Tie a loop in the loose end of the tippet, you don't have to loop it over the reel foot, the loop itself 99.9% of the time will keep it from wrapping under itself. Pete Fishing in the rain!

Posts: 1764 07/30/2008 13:27 Registered User	Another reason I don't fish reels that have to be totally disassembled by taking out a number of small screws to get the common line/leader/tippet problems straightened out. Much easier on the stream with a removable spool and no tools required. gofish
