My most recent addition is a Walt Carpenter Browntone Prototype Parabolic 7'1" 2/2 4wt. #1 with two different tips. Walt in his letter of provenance
to me wrote it's " One of Kind ".

Nice Dennis -Pretty Glassy Varnish! What is the difference between the two tips (tip thickness, mainly?) - wonder why the snake near the ferrule is placed difefrently on one that the other? Super buy! Kevin |

Kevin,
The tips almost look identical except for the extra guide on one. I will say they have thinnest tips I've ever seen. On another note I've been invited to participate in gathering of world class casters and cane folks which includes Per Brandin to test drive a plethora of cane rods. I'm bringing the Carpenter and my Montagne plus a few others. I doubt I'll be casting much to save the embarrasment but doing alot of watching. Dennis |

Deenis -Sounds like an interesting rod - would not have guessed that the tips would be that fine. Have fun casting rods and let the rods do the work!

These guys are tournament casters from the S.F. Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club. I'm a decent caster but I want see what these guys can do with a cane
rod. Evidently, Per is in S.F competing at the Golden Gate Club now.

I just got my first bamboo rod, a 7'9" 5wt 3pc by Dennis Stone. It feels light in the hand and appears to be very well made. I've paired it with
a really flexible SA DT5. Its my first DT line and it casts very accurately and drops a fly as gently as can be. It also really rips a WF4. I've only got
to try it out for a very short time, but on my first three casts I hooked three brownies, talk about some mojo. Oh, and its pretty too:

WM GV8040 | #1009 | ||

Hi,
Just received this plastic on grip W&M GV8040 from Streamer and had managed to lawn
cast it a couple of times. IMHO, one of the sweetest tapers I've ever felt, like a Leonard 50DF with the rather fine tips and yet retain a Western style
backbone that delivered the final punch. It managed to aerialize a 5wt WF 60ft and to shoot some line beyond 70ft. It is very light for a solid built 8 footer
and the Granger 'hinges' are less prominent compared to my GGF7633. Much more 'medium' compared to my Heddon #125 2F ferrule (#20 taper) and
certainly lighter in feel which is obvious since the Heddon is 5.10oz compared to the Granger's 4.0oz. I suspect that a Heddon with a smaller ferrule #0F
will match this Granger in terms of casting feel but for now, the GV8040 is much nicer since I have learned to appreciate the lighter ( 4oz and below) medium
action rods. Anyone willing to part with a Goodwin GF8040 or an 8ft Heddon #17 0F ferrule?? I'm sliding down the blue collar rod slope very quickly! Thanks
Streamer and all blue collar cane fans.

Got two; both 8 footers and in excellent + condition. A #14 Thoroughbred Heddon and a Granger Victory, both to be fished.

This rod belongs to my 6-year-old daughter. I got it for her to use as she grows up and gets more experience on the stream. It's a 6'6" 4wt rod by
Chicago-area poet and rod builder, Rob Hoffhines. I's a sweet little rod that is a pure joy to cast! My girl will get a feel for it with a Rio Mainstream
WF-5 then progress to a DT-4 as she becomes more proficient.
BTW, that's her reel you see in the pics... |

Dennis Menscer - Little River Rod Co. | #1013 | ||
|
...just purchased another rod from Dennis Menscer of Little River Rods, Hancock, NY... It's an 8'-0", 2/2, #4... However, it was
built special with 2 butt sections, one labeled the "East" and the other the "West"... these refer to the
East and West Branch of the Delaware River... the butt on the "West" is heavier thus making it faster, whereas when using the "East" butt
the rod is slower... reasoning is, as many may know, the West Branch tends to experience more wind than the more protected waters along the East Branch......
nice!... cherry burl seat, blued guides & cap & ring, dark green silk wraps with ivory tipping...

Seattlesettlers,
God bless you both. I hope your daughter has as much fun with her rod as mine has with hers -- a 6'6 Pennington Pine River 3-weight. I want her to start trying a 5-weight, but she doesn't see the point. |

Bob,
Dennis makes very nice rods. I've handled and cast a couple of them but I have never had the pleasure of fishing one. He's quite a character, too.

engima 309: That is one of the nicest rods (honestly) I have seen: Nice details like the mortised swelled cane, the lively flamed cane and the modest wrappings
and hard ware. The rod is very distinguished and understated. Mostly, the mortised rods are way over the top with ornamentation.

Took Mario's rod out for its maiden voyage today. 6'8", 2/2, DT2 hex.
Has good karma too.....caught 30 brookies today with this. What a hoot on a 2 weight line. |
