Posts: 837 06/06/2008 04:30	Tags : None I asked this question about 3 years ago and seeing Jeff bring up an old question it reminded me about this topic. One I'm always interested in. The question is which rods do you fish the most ? After seeing all new rod everyone seem to have the answers to this question may be different for the old timers. It will be a new questions for some of the new people. Last time people listed rods covering all the lengths some listed 2 or 3. It would be nice to list the maker and the size and line wt. if it's a copy let use know. I use all my rods each year, some only once or twice. I'm only going to list the rods I seem to use all the time, some are from the old list and some are new. My Top 3 8'-0" Payne 201 by Mike Brooks 3/2 # 5/6 line ( If I could have only one rod to fish this is it ) 8'-0" Dickerson 8012 by Lou Parks 2/2 #4 Hollow Built ( new to my list ) 7'-9" Payne Parabolic 2/2 5wt by Mike Brooks ( great fun to cast, loads of power ) Small Stream rods - 2 nice creeks by the house 7'-0" Calviello CT704SSS 2/1 # 4 line (new to the list) bamboo ferrules really give a sweet smooth feel 7'-0" Leonard ACM 3734 taper by Mike Brooks 3/2 #3-4wt (new to the list) Specialty rods 8'-0" Orvis Battenkill 2/2 6/7 wt. 4 3/8 oz #47523 ( streamers, summer steelhead, strippers ) Great big water rod 8'-6" Brooks Steelhead/Salmon Rod 2/2 7/8wt My wife likes to use these - she also likes the Dickerson 8012 7'-6" Payne 100 2/2 5wt by Mike Brooks ( great casting rod ) 7'-6" Dickerson 7613 Taper by Lou Parks 2/2 #5 Hollow Built Rods added recently these will see lots of action 7'-0" Bill Edwards Dartmouth #41 Quad 2/2 5wt 7'-6" Heddon #13 Featherweight 2/2 01/2F HEH Alan

Posts: 2647 06/06/2008 06:14	I pretty much only fish rods that I make and this year there are 2: 7'-6" 2/2 #4/5 Leonard Hunt taper. This is my larger stream rod , faster action with alot of backbone. 6' 2/2 #2 small stream rod. I forget how I ended up with this taper but I believe it's based on the Payne 95 and Leonard 36-2 and some trial and error as I'm always fussing with tapers. I made it in 2006 as a one piece and it performed beautifully so I added a ferrule in 2007 and a bit more wood to compensate for it. Medium fast and delicate without being the least bit wimpy. I fish #16 dries (Wulff or Stimulator) with the occasional #20 nymph dropper and the Sage Quite Taper DT-2 line. My favorite all time little rod.

Posts: 280 06/06/2008 06:42	The majority of my fishing is done with either a 7 1/2' 3/2 1 1/2F Heddon #17 w/a 4DT or an 8' 3/2 1 3/4F Heddon #17 with a 5DT.Very rarely use any other rods,the other dozen just kinda sit and patiently wait.................

Leonard 65 L - 5 wt. Recently acquired and getting to know each other. T&T Hendrickson 7 1/2' 5 wt. Heddon #13 3 piece, 7 1/2' 4 wt. Phillipson Dry Fly Special 6/7 wt. The neglected of 2008 Payne 97 Summers 275 Leonard Fairy Catskill Granger GF8040, 7635, 7030 and others. It's been a strange year, with floods, drought, $4 gas, I am not getting out as much.

Posts: 97 06/06/2008 11:04	For small stream work I prefer my Jenkins GA70L3-2, 7', 3 wt, if I need a little more heft on small streams I use a Leonard Model 48 Tournament 7', 4 wt that can handle streamers and weighted nymphs for big fish. On spring creeks with long leaders and light tippets I use my 7'9", 4 wt Winston quad or my 8'0", 3 wt Taransky Monaro Deluxe For 7'6" 5 wts I prefer my Leonard 49df and Payne 198. For 8'0" 5 wts I use a Leonard 50df, Brandin 805-2df HB quad, Payne 201 or Kusse Catskill 2-piece quad For bigger water, bigger fish and windy days I use a Spittler 8', 6 wt 3/2 HB quad or a Leonard 4099 Tournament. I have just started to use a few 8'6" rods and picked up a Montague 3-piece 4 wt for tricos on freaky fish that will lay down a leader without a ripple and a Payne 205. I'm waiting on Dave Collyer to deliver that Leonard 50 1/2df. I also have my eye on a Leonard 4099 1/2 Tournament. As you can see I gravitate toward Paynes and pre-fire Leonards. No more Paynes though, they've gone beyond my budget. So I'm looking for prefire Leonards. Just picked up a Leonard Parabolic that I'm not sure what I'll do with but I bought it just because. Those old fishermen: They're slow-moving and crabby and some of them talk to themselves, but they can catch trout. Looking back at the list I note that all are three piece -- I travel to fish. This is a list of rods that I seldom leave at home. I have a number of other wonderful rods. Wish I used them more.

Drew I just picked up a Heddon #13 7 1/2' it's in for restoration and can't wait to get it on the water. It felt great lawn casting. Rocketman I see you like to fish with your Quads, I just got my first one a few weeks ago. Its the Bill Edwards 7' #41. Posts: 303 06/06/2008 12:34	Hard to say because my rod "collection" is intended to meet a variety of fishing circumstances. But if pushed-- Top 3: -W&M Granger Aristocrat 8642 5 wt. Great all-round rod. -Orvis Midge 7 1/2' 3/2 HEG (5) but fished as a 4. More than just a "midge" rod. -PHY Midge 6' 3" 2/2 4 wt. (AJ Thramer rendition) very, very nice rod and I love small streams. I often venture onto larger water with this rod just because I like it. Not far behind: -Wulff/Farlows for Norm Thompson, etc. 7' 2/2 6 wt. but often fished as a 5 or even a 4. (quite versatile) Others: Fished occasionally, but really intended for teaching and ultimately as gifts to others. Orvis Battenkill 7' 2/2 HDG (6) but better with a 5 South Bend 290 7 1/2' 2/1 5 wt. refinished. Rods newly acquired, all unfished (so far.....): I retire next year and plan some serious time on the water! -J.D. Wagner Signature Series 8' 3/2 for 5/6 wt. Will very likely lead the top 3 list in the near future as my go-to all rounder. -Mike Brooks 8 1/2' 3/2 hollow-built 7/8 wt. for salmon and steelhead. To be christened this July on the Miramichi. A specialty rod for sure but one that will see a lot of use East, West and even way up North! -F.E. Thomas Browtone 8 1/2', 2/2 5 wt. and a 6 wt. with the short tip. Hmmmmmmmmmm. What to do? I got it because I wanted it and because I will retire not far from Bangor. How's that for nostalgia? But what about the Granger? Well, I guess I'll just have to use the Granger out West and the Thomas in the East and let them both compete for fishing time with the Wagner when the water might suggest any of the three. Wont retirement be wonderful?
