Hi there, just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I grew up in Colorado and caught my first fish on a fly rod when I was about
7 but I've been fishing graphite my whole life (now in my mid 20s). I bought my first bamboo rod last year and I'm in love. I'm a grad student
so my budget is modest - I'm pretty much limited to the lower end of the better production rods (i.e., Granger Champion type rods) and I usually go for
fixer-uppers to make them more affordable, but I'm a do-it-yourself type and I'm having lots of fun working on and fishing with these rods. I'm
actually getting a Phillipson Paragon into fishable shape right now and I've posted a question about it on the repairs forum. If you're feeling
generous and/or know a lot about Phillipsons please check it out! Anyway, I've been browsing the posts and it looks like there are a lot of experts and a
wealth of information. I'm really looking forward to learning a lot more about cane rods here!

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys. I'm sure I will be asking for frequent help. I'm working on my first restoration now and hope to build my first rod
over the summer, schedule permitting, and I cannot believe what a great resource the board members are! If I'm in Colorado in July I will definitely stop
by, sounds like a blast. I'm in school in New Jersey, though, so sadly I don't make it back out West too often. Discovering some surprisingly good
trout fishing in northern NJ, though.

Have to confess to not exploring outside of NJ yet. I know there's supposed to be a lot of good water in Pennsylvania and the Catskills, but haven't
known where to start. Saw on your profile that you lived in that area for a long time. Any recommendations?

Thanks for the tip. Just checked on google maps and it looks like Roscoe is less than three hours away from me. Sounds like that will be a great base to
start exploring from. Guess I'll have to head out there in a couple weeks when I'm done with exams!

Hello Bamboo Student,
Here are a couple of suggestions: 1. There are some "little known" rod makers who produce excellent rods selling new in the $600 to $750 range. Lew Parks from Michigan is one of them and he uses L. L. Dickerson tapers. Lyle Dickerson is right up there in everybody's top 5 rod makers the world has ever seen, but he passed away in the 1970s. His tapers live on and his rods sell today from $5000 and up. But if you can find a used Lew Parks rod that somebody bought, tried and then traded, you'll have an excellent stick for perhaps $350 to $400. (Get in touch with Bob Selb, The Classic Flyfisherman, in Lansdale, PA. He handles a lot of rods and has had used Parks (and similar) rods in the past at very low prices.) 2. From anywhere in NJ you can easily drive to some great fishing streams in PA. I-80 and I-76 will take you to a lot of great streams in the area of Penns Creek (between Bucknell Univ & Penn State). Adams County near Gettysburg has some great flyfishing as well. 3. As someone else mentioned, you MUST visit the Catskill streams in and around Roscoe, NY. If you are in northern NJ, a two hour ride will get you to the Battenkill River and surrounding waters on both the New York and Vermont sides. Actually the NY side of the Battenkill seems to be fishing better these days. 4. Fishing with cane rods is all about finding the "perfect" rod for you. Every cane rod is different, and I mean EVERY. The same "model" from the same maker will feel differently because the age of the cane used and the processes it goes through while being individually handcrafted produces a "unique" result. [Of course, in this search for the "perfect" bamboo rod you will eventually invest about $50,000 and then keep churning that money over and over during your lifetime as you buy and sell rods in the quest for "keepers." I have perhaps 6 of those "I'll never sell it" rods but it has taken me 42 years to find them and I've owned several hundred rods during that time.) 5. Good luck and welcome to the Forum. You will learn a lot by staying in touch here, and remember NEVER fish an "artificial" rod when you have a chance to fish bamboo. You'll never learn a thing from a so-called "modern material" rod. That's why there are so many members of this forum.

Pete - thanks for some very good advice. Just checked out Bob Selb's website and it looks like he has a great inventory of rods on hand. Unfortunately I've burned up my rod buying budget for the foreseeable future with the Phillipson I just picked up, but I'll definitely have to at least stop by his shop and see if I can cast some of the rods next time I'm passing through the area. I'm sure I'd learn quite a bit just talking to him. In the meantime, I'll have to start planning some trips both to PA and Roscoe. And no need to worry about me fishing graphite these days... like I said in my first post it was pretty much love at first sight with my first bamboo rod, and I'm sure it's only going to get worse from here. |
