I have had the great pleasure of sharing my Murphy's along with the other rods in the "Gnome's Travelling Rod Show" with people who have read
about but never seen one.
The looks of awe and reverence are hard to describe. So in my case when a historically significant rod comes into my collection it joins the show and helps to educate and also gives people a chance to see some of the more rare rods out here in the west and in a place where there is no established museum about angling with my den being the exception. Where else can you see an Abbey&Imbrie / Hiram Leonard copy of a Murphy? So in some cases when a rod goes into a private collection it actually gets more exposure than when donated to the established museums that for their part already have what I display but they keep theirs in storage and only show a few rods per year as Tom Pointed out. When the GTRS is on display it shows almost 100 rods and from the majority of the makers of the past. Not bad for the efforts of a trout bum / collector who does not hide his collection away. Jeff |

Hey Jeff:
What's your take on the rod in question? Scott

Scott,
Nice old Murphy with a short mid and tip and from his later production due to the Newark marking. I would have to echo Tom Kerr's thoughts on this rod to a T !!! That is a rod in the right circumstances I would fish, and I have fished my Murphy that is also a short mid and tip rod. Charles was there in spirit and I could tell from the goosebumps and the cold chills that kept coming everytime I hooked a little cutt with that rod 8-) Jeff |

I think it was about 1985 that I saw a Murphy rod for sale in the T&T
or maybe it was Orvis used rod adds that they used to send out and I mentioned to my wife that 'd like to own a Murphy rod.
Imagine my delight when I opened that long thin package that was under the Xmas tree and found an 11 foot, 3/2 CF Murphy rod. I bought a display case for it and kept it above my tying desk and often wandered what it would be like to fish such a
rod. I had a 2 ½" all brass Garland & Co. of London Bridge reel made during the same period that I displayed
with the rod. One day I took rod, reel and a silk line on one of my trips to Hat Creek and caught an 8"
brown. As Jeff has said, it was thrilling. I put the rod and reel back in the
display case and that's where it stays to this day. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it when my time
comes. I have a son-in-law and a grandson that play around at fly fishing and I would like to keep the rod and reel in
the family so I'll probably leave it to them rather than will it to a museum.
Those old fishermen: They're slow-moving and crabby and some of them talk to themselves, but they can catch trout.

When checking the website out this morning I saw that bidding had ended for the Murphy.Last time I checked it was up to a little over $700.The only thing
listed at end of auction was the starting bid.No mention of auction ending early and NO PURCHASE PRICE.Is this part of the new policy? Anyone know what this
rod sold for?

Methinks someone made the seller an offer he couldn't refuse. The auction was ended because of "an error in the description". Funny the error
wasn't discovered until just a few hours before the end......

Good news and bad news | #32
|
The good news is that the Murphy rod has been re-listed. The bad news is that the guy found my web page on Murphy and now thinks that he owns the Mother Lode.
It's been relisted at $5000 or Best Offer. On the plus side, the pictures are better. The rod has both tips after all and apparently the black pin pricks
that are discussed in AJ Campbell's book and that appear on the Gnome's rod. That makes it an early Murphy rod as well. --Tom

This was a wonderful example of how to discuss an item.......... | #33
|
from eBay. There are probably many out there who are wondering why this was allowed, simply put it wasn't about eBay, it did not list a link to the item
and when asked what the item number was it was given as the number and not linked, it also was a real discussion about the item both the good and bad parts
which were done with proper decorum. So the question may arise if eBay items can be discussed and the simple answer is no, not if there are links, the subject
is about eBay rather than the item to be discussed or it discusses the seller, if the subject line is about the item and a reasonable discussion is the end
result the short answer is yes its allowable. Many thanks to those who did such a nice job here in this discussion it is a much better example than we could
possibly try to describe for those who wish to pursue discussions about items on eBay. Regards...........

Back on board for less than 24 hours and the seller accepted a best offer of $3800.Since I know next to nothing about the value of a rod of this historical
significance, was that high, low or just about right? Thanks for any answers and opinions.I was glad I got to finally see a Murphy, even if it was only a picture.

Murphy rod, Waring rod examples | #35
|
At Lang's last November, an incredibly nice Murphy in 1/2/3 format sold for $3575 after buyer's premium. All sections were full length except for one
tip. It was nicer in terms of condition, but did not have the black pin pricks or cup mark bruises from "clamping" for planing. I paid $1900 for my
Murphy at Sotheby's in 2001. I'm hopeful that this simply indicates that high end rods and reels appreciate faster than others, especially when there
is special historical significance like the pin pricks. My Murphy (with cup marks) was sold as 3/1 - all full length. Several months later, I discovered a 2nd
tip down 3 1/2" buried under red velvet fuzz in one of the lined tubes of the case.
As another data point, a guy approached me a few months ago about his Norman Waring fly rod. Again, 3/2 in great condition and the lowest known serial number of the 7 known rods. All of the rest have sold for $1100 or less. He found a private buyer at $2500. I'm hoping it bodes well for selling mine some day. I've begun to seriously regard my high end purchases as smart investments(?) - especially give the current stock market and dollar situation. -Tom

One look at the buyer tells a lot. He has been running around like a Hoover for the last year, sucking up old cane rods including four rods recently with
inlaid butts and crisp Chubb decals. He's a man on a mission.
