Posts: 347 09/12/2008 16:52	Tags : None New Rod.....it's coming, received information from the maker (builder) today it will ship Monday morning overnight with scheduled delivery of Tuesday Sept. 16th...(anyone want to place a bet) close to 2,000 mile overnight journey. What do you do to occupy your time between now and then? Shit I'm 60...yea I know young for most of this forum...but I feel like a 6 year old Christmas Eve day....is it time yet? I will wait to discribe the rod ...somewhat unique....total custom job by the maker, which by the way has been one of the finest MEN I have ever worked on any type of project with. When named next week (he is a forum member), many will immediately agree, but I'm serious....this project was started in May with conversation about an idea, and culmenates next Tuesday ( I hope ), and this Gentlemen has been so easy and helpful to work with. So I post this hopeing some of you have just a WEE bit of discomfort and anxity along with all of mine until it arrives.....misery loves company, Right? Until then, I hope your trips are successful, your Bamboo rods perform falwlessly and your family are safe and healthy....I'm off to the liquor store to secure enough Tequila to get me thru until Tuesday. Posts: 353 09/16/2008 19:13	Stress is over she, he, it....has arrived. Probably the biggest challenge in this project. USPS was a little hesitant in shipping that long of a packaged and Tom was on pins and needles until I just called him to say it arrived safe and sound, overnight from New Jersey to Linden, Ca.. Kudos to the Postal Service...(this time). 7.5' of beautiful light blond, clear wrapped 1 piece wonder. A Tom Smithwick creation beautiful clear straight grained Boo ...custion grip for my big paws (which fit perfect) and uplocking reel seat. Stout 6wt for the Rogue.....Tom says he tested it with a cortland Classic Peach WF6F and cast a long way across the yard. Taper...I'm going to let Tom describe that....like I mentioned in another post...this taper is a colloberation of a couple of men and started from a Powell B9 taper and was tweeked by Mr. Smithwick, to reach perfection. Speaking of Mr. Smithwick...what a great experience talking to him, comparing notes with him and reading about his ideas after I described what I was looking for. Now I see the final product...and he clearly is a craftsman in this field. Will photograph the rod and field test tomorrow with a review of it's casting abilities......got to come up with a name in the mean time. Anybody know how to tell if it is male or female? If,on the other hand,it's easy to get along with and does what you expect and likes your brand of tequila,it's a male.The first and only one piece that I have made was one of Tom's tapers. A 5'6" 5wt.Very fast for bamboo and that along with the short length makes it a great little rod.Look forward to the report and the pictures.........Will

I didn't know it was yours (didn't ask who it was for), but I can tell you this... if Tom made it, you'll get a lot of pleasure from it. Posts: 428 09/16/2008 20:12	I'm glad you like it, Monty. A careful choice of clients is vital to success as a rod designer:-) Disclaimer: I am an amateur experimenter, and not looking for rod orders. I only got involved in this deal because the parameters of what Monty was looking for interested me. Basically, he was looking for a big water, big fish, one piece rod. My own part of this is that I wanted to give him something that was not so stiff that it did not feel like a bamboo rod, or was tiring to fish. I let him peek into my mind as I went through the process of design and building, and he seems to have survived the ordeal mentally intact. Amazing. I'm off on a trip for a few days, but will comment on the taper, if anyone wants, after Monty has had a shot at casting and fishing the rod. I made a photo essay of how to build a long rod on short forms, which will be posted as a tutorial at bamboorodmaking.com. It really is not all that hard.

Posts: 135 09/16/2008 20:20	Monty Montana, Quite a few year back I had a customer asked me to build him a 7 1/2 foot 1 pc for a 4 wt. I discussed the pros and cons with him and he assured me that he was going to keep it in his cabin by the river (couple of miles away) and that transporting it wouldn't be a problem. So I agreed to build the rod for him. Well I had to build a new dip tube and find a place with the clearance to dip the rod and that is only one of the challenges that this type of build presents. I ordered a special tube for the rod and when it arrived it was bent in two! I sure am glad it was empty! Anyway after this gentleman had the rod for about a month, he told me one day "this rod is kinda a PITA to trasport, Will you cut it in half and put a ferule in it?" Well the short answer was NO!!!!!!!! although I must say that there were many discriptive words to go along with that. My hats off to Mr. Smithwick, for I know what it means to build one of these. But I have spoken to him many times about rod design, casting and rod function Rest assured if Tom has made you a rod it will be a totally designed around you own personal casting and fishing criteria. You guys sure got some good, and pretty funny, stories to tell. -John PS Monty just get some magnetic/vacuum racks for your car, or use a yakima ski rack, just spread the ski holders as far apart as you can.
