The best information that I currently have indicates that Paul H. Young began serial numbering his rods sometime in 1955, beginning with the number 1955, or
possibly 1950. PHY made rods other than fly rods - he built baitcasters, spinning rods, saltwater rods - but until today all of the serial numbered PHY rods
that I found references for were fly rods. But in a twenty-year-old Martin J. Keane catalog (catalog #50, dated 1988), I have found listing #178, which is a
serial-numbered PHY spinning rod. Keane's full description follows:
Fine orig. PAUL YOUNG "Spinmaster" in delightful lt. wt. design, 6'4", 3.10 oz., Ser. #1957, 2/1, Super-Z ferrules, gorgeous dark flamed exotic cane w/bronze wraps, double ring classic spin handle, orig. foul-proof standing guides, a surprisingly strong action - certainly one of America's best & most beautiful spinning rods ever built. Overall exc. cond. w/bag & tube. $400.
I have collected 211 descriptions of serial-numbered rods. 210 are fly rods. Note that this exception, rod #1957, is one of the very earliest serial numbered rods. I don't know whether PHY quickly decided to serial number only fly rods, or whether there are other serial-numbered non-fly rods still to be identified.
As always, I ask forum members to share with me information about their PHY rods so that I can add it to the database. In particular, I'd like to know if anyone knows of other PHY serial-numbered non-fly rods. Many thanks.
