Hi Guys, This is degrading for for me as I've never done this sort of thing before. Well, here goes. There is a Charles Murphy on Ebay. I bid on it but
I'm out due to having no guts or money. But I am curious as to how high this thing can go and sour grapes is my motivation. I hope one of you bastards
bidding friend against friend will mortgage the farm, go broke and end up sleeping under bridges clutching to your heart the treasure of your poor pathetic
life. Maybe you'll sell it to me [if I can find you] for the cost of a cup of ...... Jay Edwards

I only hope the "Powers That Be" will allow some board discussion of this particular historic fly rod.
I, for one, would sure be interested in knowing more about it and its importance. Regards, Scott

Hi Guys, It is beautiful isn't it? History for sale, I don't recall seeing another one for sale. I hope there will be some discussion bringing us
all up to date with latest information. I remember Marty Keane's book comparing Murphys and Leonards and the sort of romance of who did what first.

There are 3 board members that have Murphy rods and I think one of the members has 2 of them.

There was another one, not quite as nice, on that auction place a year or two back but it never reached Joe Onions' reserve on it, IIRC. However, a board
member did acquire it shortly thereafter and may even still have it. I know what the last one at Lang's went for (in November), and my guess is that this
one will sell for multiples of $1000. We won't know until the fat lady sings, I'm afraid.

How does this rod compare with other Murphys recently sold/known about, in terms of condition/desirability?

Murphy rod | #10 | ||

It is a gorgeous rod. IMHO, all Murphy rods are, but I'd like to add a few potentially irreverent comments. Hopefully, they will be thought provoking as
opposed to just provoking. The rod should sell for more than $1000, but there are mitigating factors.
Murphy rods of this era were either 3/2 or 1/2/3 in a "formed" case of some sort - meaning 3 pc / 2 tips or 3pc with 2 mids and 3 tips. Early Murphy rods like this one were very special. I've owned three and held more. The mids and tips were 19's and 12's in terms of ferrule sizes and were interchangeable. Every mid fit every butt that I've seen and every tip fit every mid - across all rods of the same size from that era (1865 - 1875ish). I don't know any rod-makers today that can make that claim. To me - that implies that he had a master butt, master mid and master tip that every rod had to match. I'm not a rod-maker, and would welcome rod-maker feedback on that somewhat bold, unsupported conjecture. In either 3/2 or 1/2/3 format, all rod sections would have been EXACTLY the same length. That's the way Murphy made them. He was a total perfectionist. All rods of this era were finished with shellac - not varnish. This one has a short mid at best and short + missing tip(s) and form case. Judge it accordingly, but it is one of less than a hundred (20?) that have survived. This rod is not original, untouched, but it is a formidable rod for any collection. I also react unfavorably to the statement about "belonging in a museum." I understand what the author meant, and I agree, but I'm more cynical. When was the last time that you saw a bamboo rod in any museum, anywhere? Some of the finest rods of all time are owned by museums - such as the Phillippe rod in the Harrisburg, PA state museum. Hasn't be on public display in probably 20 years. The American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester, VT has hundreds and hundreds of primo rods in storage, but the museum displays only about 30 a year? The rest are stored in their archives. There are more rods viewed annually on this board than all of the world's museums combined.. Think about it. It belongs any place where it will be shared with people who will appreciate seeing it. I just don't think that is a museum. Go bid on it and buy it. Then treasure it, and share it if you're so disposed. -Tom

For the blooming record, I really don't care where it goes. Some nice rich white guy, that would be swell. Its just a fishing pole anyway.

Well stated Tom.
I know nothing of Murphy's rods, but it is easy to see that the sections are not of equal length. Bob |

Thanks Tom, nice to hear from you regarding Murphy.
I had to pull Rod Crafting off the bookshelf just to look at your rods and others one more time. You make a great point about being stuffed in storage and no one getting to see the rods. Books like Jeff Hatton produced lets all of use all stay in touch with how it all started. |

gt05254,
For the "blooming record" its not just a fishing pole, its a bit of history, and should be thought of as such. Bruce |

Well, here's the deal: I've held Murphy's in my hands. I was the poor schmuck who had to decide what rods to include in AMFF's Anglers All
exhibition, after hours of debates with the likes of Marty Keane and Ernie Schwiebert. I just get ticked when people say that items get better care and more
exposure in private hands. Yeah, well what happens when the guy dies and the family needs some new tomato stakes? You can trust me Bruce when I tell you that I
KNOW that the rod is a bit of history, and that is precisely WHY I said it belongs in a museum. And I don't care which one. For the blooming record.

Hi Guys, I recall going to the Denver Public Library some years ago while my wife did some research. They have a major collection of 'angling '
books. I asked to see some and the rare book guy said, "what do you want to see?" I was so taken aback that I couldn't think of an 'angling
' book let alone a fishin' book so I said, " just bring something interesting." Skues, Halford, etc. I don't even know what all but he
was very helpful. What would happen if I asked at a museum? At least the pieces of the puzzle would be there. Nice rod, huh? Jay Edwards

At least while I was there, the AMFF accomodated every request to view artifacts. Those requests were not very numerous.

gt - My mention of the AMFF wasn't a slur in any way. I visit the museum as often as I can. I am an annual Sponsor. They've helped me on every occasion
that I've asked. That said, I simply offered my own opinion. The tides wax and wane. A wealthy collector from the San Diego area had a huge tackle
collection, including almost every known Hardy reel. That collection became the majority of the Granville Island Sport Fishing Museum. The museum folded
several years ago. The entire collection was purchased by a private BC, CA collector. He's sold many of the pieces that don't fit his personal
collection interests on eBay. That's where I picked up my English spike reel, my Scotish twist engine and my 1851 John J Brown (NYC) Anglers Almanac. That
one - I'll leave it to the AMFF in a few years? -Tom
