Personally speaking, I would very much prefer to buy John Gierach's new book from South Creek Ltd.
Mike and Kathy are well respected members of this Forum and offer outstanding communication, a personal relationship with Mr. Gierach, and incomparable service! I bought my first edition, signed by the author, from them and was most pleased with the transaction! I am hopeful that other Forum members would feel the same!! Bob |

Every fly fisherman has his favorite writers. It's a necessity, because it's so much easier to find time to read than it is to find time to fish.
Gierach is wonderful. I've read most of his books. I like Bill Tapply too.

got me in trouble by selling me the book (and some of A.K.'s flies). Seems my wife thought she was getting me a Fathers Day present I wouldn't have,
since the book had just come out. She was ticked when she saw Fool's Paradise on my nightstand reading pile.

I bought every book Gierach wrote from Mike and Kath, all signed and unfortunately all read (accept Fools Paradise which I'm rationing myself on, so I
don't finish it in one sitting!)
Got to hand it to John, he sure knows how to tell a good story. I actually had the chance to fish with him and CD Clarke in Labrador. It was a chance happening - believe it or not, and I was absolutely thrilled to be able to watch him cast so gracefully to rising char. He caught 3 or 4 to every one I caught and we were using the same flies (he likes to share). Well, if you've read the chapter "Labrador" it is a perfect and exact rendition of what happened on the trip, from the hatch, to the quantity of fish taken, to the talented bush pilot, to the friendliness and professionalism of the folks at Three Rivers Lodge. What impresses me most about John is his humility, wit, and careful attention to nature's details. He'll take the time out to teach you a new cast even during the peak of an evening rise, tell a great story or two during dinner, but will never brag about how many or how big his fish were that day. When he writes that the fish he caught was perhaps 6 pounds, but will commit to 5 to be on the safe side, you can be pretty sure that the fish was closer to 7 had you hung it on a scale. Through John's books, I've gotten into bamboo and discovered Southcreek. Learned to respect and admire Mike and Kath's beautiful work, and fish with AK's flies. Thanks to them I've found out about this forum, have made new friends and have been learning ever since! |

Booksigning in Manchester, VT | #13 | ||
|
Somehow, the book signing tour had one event on the East coast this year. I haven't been to the Orvis store in Manchester in many years so the new building
was quite a surprise. (The trout in the indoor and outdoor pools were quite surprising too.) There was a line at eleven when the signing started but it tapered
off to someone every once in a while after an hour or so. John was engaging in conversation as the books got signed and there was plenty of time for everyone.
About one o'clock six maybe eight folks sat down and since it was a small group, John thought it would be more fun to answer questions than to read aloud.
The conversation was wide ranging and lasted till two. It was the first time I had visited with John and even my non-fisher wife enjoyed the friendly and
thoughtful conversation. Afterwards the American Museum of Fly Fishing had a few bamboo rods to cast and I finally had a chance to see how my 8'6"
Thramer compares to a Granger (very favorably).

I just got my signed copy from South Creek a few days ago. I'm taking my time reading and enjoying Fool's Paradise. Gierach's books have been good,
relaxing fireside reads for me and this new one is no different.

What single malt would you recommend to go with "Fool's Paradise"? Was rereading "Even the Brook Trout Get the Blue's" last night
thinking about the mid-atlantic bamboo claves and the friends made. He might have Clarke, Engle, Best, and Summers. We have Rolf, Andre, Howard, Len and Marty!

That's an easy one. I LOVE single malt and have tried many from all over the island. Keep coming back to my old stand by - Laphroaig (Gaelic for
"the beautiful hollow by the broad bay") 10 year old from Islay. Not old, but very peaty, very rich in flavor. Why I recommend Laphroaig with a
Gierach book - it's full of character.
Cheers! |

Gee, thanks, B-dog. However, I'm not sure we're in the same league as that Colorado crowd and you didn't include yourself. Although, the
Cloozoe-DeFazio and Andre-DeFazio debates are the stuff of legend, rivaling Lincoln-Douglas in 1858.
As for single malt, I recently opened a bottle of Longmorn 15 y.o. and with the weather getting warmer I think it will be an excellent choice - not as peaty or heavy as some - just a lighter yet flavourful dram. |

Just got my copy of " Fool's Paradise" from the Book Mailer. I've been loyal to the memory of Gary LaFontaine, another favorite author of mine. Sorry Mike and Kathy. The only problem now will be limiting my reading of the book to one segment a night and not rushing through it all like I've done in the past.

Started to read last night while watching the Sox game, put it down around the 7th inning to watch Jon Lester finish out his no hitter! Pete |

Got mine yesterday, and must try not to read it in one go, but rather divide the reading pleasure over several days.
Purchased a hardcover 'Where The Trout Are As Long as Your Leg' on FlyFair 2008, so that might help...
