After reading the many silk line threads here I decided to take the plunge and order my first silk. I have read several posts that stated be careful regarding
the line weight. Often times the advertised line weight was a little on the heavy side. A couple of dealers names popped up as dealers who weigh the lines
before sending. I ordered a DT 4 line from one of those dealers and asked for the heaviest 4 weight that he had. I received the line and started going through
the massaging process and the line started coming around nicely. Today I decided to cast the line for a while. It became immediately apparent that the line was
not loading the rod the way a 4 wt should. I took the line in and threw it my scientific scale and found that the first thirty feet weigh in at 103-104 grains.
Most of the plastic 4 wt lines that I own come in at around 120-125 grains.
I sent the dealer the following email:
"I received my DT4 Thebault and have put it through 4 massages and decided to cast it for a little while today. After the first few casts it was apparent that the line was not loading the rod at all. I took it inside and put it on the scale and found that this line weighs in at 103-104 grains and is of little use to me unless it gains a substantial amount of weight during break-in. Please recall that I requested that you send the heaviest 4 DT that you had. Do you recall what you weighed this line at?
Thanks."
and the response from the dealer:
"That is the heaviest DT 4 I had.
If you wanted a DT 5 I would have sent it!"
Frankly, If I wanted a DT 3 I would have asked for it.
Any ideas here? Is this common? Anyone interested in a partially broken in 15 yd DT3?
