I'm mulling over the 7' 9" 3 piece rod for either a 4 or 5 weight line. Haven't really decided on any particular maker.
What rod are you hoping to see show up on your doorstep next?

Idly considering my next bamboo rod purchase, and was wondering what rods other members might be targetting?

I have a few rods in the pipeline but only two that I haven't made a definite decision on. One is a penta from Jerry at Sweetgrass and the other a quad
from Dana Gray. I don't own an 8' 5wt, so I may just fill that niche with one of these commissions. It seems almost sacrilegious to not own an 8'
5wt....
I am also a proponent of getting a rod from a maker that they consider their "signature" rod or one that is very popular and highly respected even among these vaunted makers. For Dana, that leaves me thinking about his 7' 2/2 4wt, 7'6" 3/2 4/5wt or 8' 3/2 5wt. However, he is developing a 7'9" 3/2 5wt that I must admit is rather appealing. For Jerry, every penta he makes seems to cast like a dream, and I've tried most of them. The two that stand out as most popular seem to be his 7'3" 2/2 4wt and 7'9" 3/2 4/5wt. I like both very much and also really liked an 8'3" 2/2 5wt I cast on the Henry's Fork. Whatever I end up doing, the list you see above undoubtedly contains my next rod commission. |

I have recently developed a hankering for an 8 foot 5 weight rod. Being fond of Orvis cane, I am on the lookout for a nice 8 foot 4 1/8 oz model Battenkill.

Bob,
I own two 7'9" 3/2's (hex & quad} in 4/5 wts with a Sweetgrass penta 5/6 wt. on order. I love the portablity for air travel in addition they do everything from dries to nymphs in a outstanding manor. If you do it you can't go wrong IMHO. Good luck!!! I'm waiting patiently for a Spittler Quad 8' 3/2 6wt. to show up next year. I may try to pickoff another older 8' or less Winston or newer Winston Brackett era hex if I can steal one for a great price. Dennis

Having just spent twelve days in Montana (late September) (last time there was 7 years ago), I came back determined to get a 8ft, 3 piece for a 6wt line. I did have a Phillipson Dry Fly Special (8 1/2 ft) - 6 wt - but the water I fished did not warrent a rod of that length. Usually I fish smaller water there - creeks - but with big fish that need to be controlled from the wood. I also find an 8ft rod much more enjoyable than fishing a longer rod (the Dry Fly Special seemed a bit stiff and took more effort to cast than I like - more suitable to larger rivers). I did have a couple of 5wt rods but they don't have the power to fight the larger fish in my opinion and take a good amount of strain when into a big fish. I once put a set into a really nice7ft, 4wt rod when it took 20 plus minutes to land a 3 pounder - ever after rotating the rod during the fight. It probably didn't help when that trout ran directly through my legs. NOW comes the best part - deciding on which 8ft, 6wt rod to buy. I find it great fun to research the rod makers, talking to them and getting ideas like here on the Forum. There are so many choices today with all the new makers out there. |

My next arrival due almost any day now is an 8' hollowbuilt 5/6 wt. Gnomish Rodworks mortised western rod. AYYYYYYYYYY I can't stand the wait!
OnlyTrout - Homer Jennings built an 8' 6/7 wt 3/2 for me. Made for the same purpose you describe. Give Homer a call and ask him about the rod he built for me. Powerful, well balanced, I use it for large trout, carp, bass and windy days. Can fish all day with no arm fatigue. My Sweetgrass 8'3" 5/6wt that Jerry Kustich played a large part in designing for me is also a powerful smooth rod that will handle the wind but can be used for general trouting. It really is more of a 6wt and my specific purpose for the rod is for smallmouth fishing so it has excellent fish fighting ability. I use it mostly for smallies but it would make a great western rod. I'm waiting for a Tim Zietak blank to show up at my rod makers shack. It will be a 7' 6", 5wt., 2/2 Quad. As soon as it shows up, we will go
over his generous supply of hardware. The recipe will go something like this......Venneri Double Slide Band Reel Seat, 6 1/2" Cigar Grip with 1/8 Cork
Rings. Fine Agate Stripper Guide in a Bright Colorful Orange, Translucent Orange Pearsall's Silk Wrapping's with Yellow Tipping. YUM, YUM.....
Anyone know of a source of quad winding checks? KERMIT

I'm considering a Bamboo Fly Rod Built by R.W. Lancaster a 7'2" 2/1 Driggs, oil finish. It has a ventilated grip with thumb relief with cork reel
seat & sliding bands. Early rod in excellent condition. The rod comes with original scotch plaid rod bag and tube. I understand Bob made nice copy's of
Young rods.

A 7 ft. 4 wt. for me. I don't have anything in the works yet, but was considering several makers. I then had the pleasure to see and cast a John Gallas
rod, and now I'm in trouble. I've cast a lot of rods and it was the best casting stick I've had in my hands, and quite beautiful. His Berkshire 7
footer may end up in my quiver.

I've been looking for a 7-foot Orvis Superfine. I don't collect and at this point in life I don't need more rods, but having and using the other
three Superfine models makes me want the fourth.
I'd appeaciate a head-up if anyone comes across a clean one for sale. |

I have been working on designing an 8' 3wt. My main concern has been the ferrule, it's weight and the effect it would have on the action. Something I
hadn't considered was a splice joint rod, the more I think about that seems the logical answer by eliminating the ferulle weight all together. Now, I have
another project, that is to make a scarfing block to cut the splices!

Actually have two on their way so it's a toss-up as to which will arrive first. I have a 8' 2/2 6 wt. Gray-Carlson coming any day and I yesterday just
purchased a 9' 2/2 5 wt. E.C. Powell I have been seeking for some time. Whichever wins the race I will not be disappointed.

I will not buy another rod until I find the perfect E. W. Edwards rod. This time I will not hesitate and wonder if I really can afford it. I don't know
how, but when the rod finds me, I will find the money.
