Going to Missoula this Sepetember for a visit. I would appreciate any ideas on where I might fish. Secondly, will Northwest let me carry 4 rods on the plane
in one of those Filson rod bags? Thanks much.

What day are you heading there? I'll be there on the 16th to see my family there and then visit our nearby cabin. If you're there around then,
I'd be happy to point you toward some areas in person (or take you to them, if time allows). Lots of options: Bitteroot, Clark's Fork, Rock Creek, Big
Blackfoot, N. Fork Blackfoot, Monture Creek, Little Blackfoot, and more. I'll be in the area for a month, although I have to do some work up in Alberta
for part of the time. Regardless, you'll love Missoula.

Good decision. I might still be hanging around Missoula at the end of the month. In case I'm not, though, feel free to email me at klokensg@gettysburg.edu. I can email you back a scanned fishing map that my family passes around to visitors, with some
great spots marked. I'll send you some other info. and my phone number too. In the meantime, I'm sure other people will chime in with advice. Ken

Fish Creek is close to Missoula and can be fun. The most beautiful place in Montana, the upper North Fork of the Blackfoot, about 2 miles above the trailhead
is worth the walk. Cutts and Bulls make it an interesting place. Matt Potter at the Kingfisher fly shop runs a
great operation.

You're right about the North Fork, tedgolden. A trail from my cabin at Cooper's Lake puts me out right in the area you recommend. Fished there all my
life.

Hey OT,
I had the same question earlier this summer, and the advice I got was spot on. A couple forum members suggested I spend time on Rock Creek (22 miles south of Missoula) and fish the different sections there. I ended up spending three days there and had an extremely nice time. It's a beautiful creek and the fishing is almost always good. It was recommended that I check in at the Rock Creek Fisherman's Mercantile (about a mile up Rock Creek Road from the interstate). I ended up staying there and listening to their advice. Check their website for daily updates. You'll have a great time out there - it's a great time of year to be in NW Montana! Dean

Yes, Rock Creek is great and for the most part easily accessible. One word of caution: When the road sign says "15 MPH
- Radar Enforced" they mean it.
The Anaconda Lakes can be interesting. But the fish run large.

Those who are fortunate to live near Missoula can probably offer more specific advice. I will be landing there on 9/21 for a few days of visiting my daughter and son-in-law. Going right up to the Swan Valley. I'll be fishing the Swan near Condon and the Blackfoot above Clearwater. But you can't go wrong if you fish Rock Creek and don't be afraid to keep going up the road along the river if you make the drive from Missoula. For the last two years I carried 8' 3/2 rods on Northwest in an Abel carrier. I assume I can do so this year. I've seen folks just carry on larger rods with rubber bands around them. |

Great info guys - much appreciated. I think I better tack on another couple of days to fish all these spots.

Ovando advice? | #10 | ||
|
I'll be near Ovando 9/10-14, and my top fishing picks are currently Flint/Monture/Rock/Upper N Fork Blackfoot. I have narrowed my carry-on rods to the
following:
6ft 6wt 2/2 Norm Thomspon Wulff 6wt 7ft 9in 6wt 3/2 med/fast Schroeder 8ft 6in 3/2 6wt Schroeder (based on a Payne 206) Hardy Smuggler 8ft 2&1/2in 7 piece 6wt It looks as if I'll be mostly throwing BWO's, October caddis, Hoppers, and various Attractor Dries (eg my favourite size 12 White Wulff) Thoughts on spots to go, rods, patterns, anything else? Thanks, and Tight Lines! Alistair

Ovando | #11 | ||

My cabin is just a few miles from Ovando, at Cooper's Lake; I know the area well. If you shoot me an email (my address is in the last message of this
thread), I'll be happy to send you a bunch of information. If we're there at the same time, I'm happy to meet up, as well. I'll be hitting
the North Fork and Monture pretty hard. Also, I can always use an excuse to stop by Trixie's Saloon in Ovando.

Northwest Airlines... | #12 | ||

As airline carriers go, NWA is one of the more tolerant of carry-on fishing rods. They seem most comfortable with multi-piece travel rods in soft covered tubes. I've seen 9' two piece rods in their original aluminum tubes carried on board but that often triggers thoughts of "weapons", i.e. aluminum baseball bats, & "length maximums for carry-on" which might lead to checked baggage depending on what side of the bed the gate checker woke up on. My twenty plus year experience with NWA to MT has been relatively good when you don't give them issue. I now check my flies with baggage and remove fly lines since each is considered a hazard or potential weapon on the plane. Give them no "Red Alert Signal" and you won't have any rod carry-on issues… but always be prepared that you might have to check your rods. Good luck & fishing…. |
