It's pretty clear that he's been too sick for quite a while to run the old business. Let's hope he recovers. He single-handedly recognized many
forgotten rodmakers, and made a substantial market for the many masterpieces that were too often neglected.

Marty was one of the fairest appraisers of bamboo fly rods. I always used his prices as a base or comparison.

You know, I'm at a loss here. I hear he's sick, I also hear he's been invited to the museum gathering this weekend in Vermont and that he's
fine. I would think the museum would know if the guy's ill or not.
What's up? Feel free to PM me. Thanks, Trout120 |

Done as in fineato, no more. I called him some time back and it took almost an act of God to get the Mrs. to put him on the phone and to be honest he sounded
kind of frail.

I'm sorry to hear about Marty. He was as honest and sincere as anyone I've ever met or dealt with.

Tim is correct! Marty is just slowing down as we will all do at some point with the aging process! Sad to see but think of what Marty has done in his lifetime.
Sold some of the best and rarest tackle you could ever fine and did it all with honesty & style, not to mention his book which I call the bible on tackle
collecting. He loves his PHY rods!
I remember talking with him at length many times years ago about all the great rods that have gone through his hand and wanting to know what that was like. In later years I could see the signs as was the case with my own father forgetting my name each time I would call. Marty is still and will forever be in my mind the King of the tackle dealers and a first class gentleman.....and most important he has alway put family first!!!

Generously and gentlemanly spoken, Rick. Marty's enthusiasm (and ability to smoke out some of the finest tackle) will always be remembered.

Hey Sorensen, you better pick up the gauntlet with your descriptions to carry on the tradition. I for one will miss stuff like "lovingly lawncast only
twice on a freshly mown lawn" or maybe "only removed from the tube, perhaps once in the shop". Damn, Marty was a master with the catalogs,
They'll be missed.

One thing at a time Tim, I need to work on my grammar & spelling first.
"Sleep deprivation is the curse on the working class" With Marty it was always from the heart! As much as I love the internet there is still something to be said about the anticipation in receiving one of Marty's catalogs and flipping through the pages! Time for bed signing off 6:03am PST. Thanks for your kind words Patrick!!!

Pat is right, of course, but I think Martin's legacy is much greater than that. Today we look at the wealth of material available to us as fly rod
enthusiasts, from significant works on Dickerson, Jordan, Edwards, etc. as well as a host of articles on everyone from Leonard and Fowler to Norris and Payne.
What is easy to forget is not a single one of these was available when he was putting together his magnum opus. It is incredibly difficult and often
frustrating work to craft a research monograph in a field with almost no secondary literature to fall back on, and yet this is exactly what Keane accomplished.
As I told a friend who emailed recently about finding an error in Keane's book, we should not be shocked that there are mistakes in Classic Rods, as that would be expected of someone working under such conditions, rather we should be amazed that he was able to write the book and limit the errors to the number that he did. Frankly, it is amazing that Keane was as accurate as he was, given the circumstances. The sum total is that we would probably not be here discussing classic rods without Martin Keane, his book, and his years of putting classic rods in people's hands. To me he is the most important person in the history of collecting vintage fly rods, and Classic Rods remains the starting point for any education in the field. -- Dr. Todd |

Dr. Todd is 100% correct. Marty had nothing to fall back on like most of todays books being written on collecting, his comments were purely from hand on tests
and observations! An accomplishment in itself to be right on the money!
As far as finding an error in Keane's book, I don't care!!! |

I purchased one rod from Marty plus a signed copy of his book eventually. Other than a few articles, for many years he was the only place where to get
information.
He shipped the rod to be in its original tube inside PVC piping. Needless to say the rod arrived undamaged. I still have the PVC! -Dick |
