I purchased one rod from Marty plus a signed copy of his book eventually. Other than a few articles, for many years he was the only place where to get information.
He shipped the rod to be in its original tube inside PVC piping. Needless to say the rod arrived undamaged. I still have the PVC!

Dr. Todd is 100% correct. Marty had nothing to fall back on like most of todays books being written on collecting, his comments were purely from hand on tests and observations! An accomplishment in itself to be right on the money!
As far as finding an error in Keane's book, I don't care!!!

I agree.

Mr. Keane's many contributions to our hobby are immeasurable. I began dealing with him in 1976 and still have all his lists dating back 32 years.

Frankly, it always causes me a bit of heartburn to read comments by today's cane rod "experts" nitpicking his seminal work, "Classic Rods and Rodmakers". Funny, but no one's stepped up to do a "better" job on the subject in the past three plus decades since its...

Pat is right, of course, but I think Martin's legacy is much greater than that. Today we look at the wealth of material available to us as fly rod enthusiasts, from significant works on Dickerson, Jordan, Edwards, etc. as well as a host of articles on everyone from Leonard and Fowler to Norris and Payne. What is easy to forget is not a single one of these was available when he was putting together his magnum opus. It is incredibly difficult and often frustrating work to craft a research...

Hey Sorensen, you better pick up the gauntlet with your descriptions to carry on the tradition. I for one will miss stuff like "lovingly lawncast only twice on a freshly mown lawn" or maybe "only removed from the tube, perhaps once in the shop". Damn, Marty was a master with the catalogs, They'll be missed.

talked to him twice about 9-12 months ago, very forgettable and very confused, it would be good to talk to him face to face i think phones are hard on elderly earlier in my life had great conversations with him only wish i had a tape recorder then he will be missed dave

Tim is correct! Marty is just slowing down as we will all do at some point with the aging process! Sad to see but think of what Marty has done in his lifetime. Sold some of the best and rarest tackle you could ever fine and did it all with honesty & style, not to mention his book which I call the bible on tackle collecting. He loves his PHY rods!

I remember talking with him at length many times years ago about all the great rods that have gone through his hand and wanting to...

Done as in fineato, no more. I called him some time back and it took almost an act of God to get the Mrs. to put him on the phone and to be honest he sounded kind of frail.

Marty was one of the fairest appraisers of bamboo fly rods. I always used his prices as a base or comparison.

It's pretty clear that he's been too sick for quite a while to run the old business. Let's hope he recovers. He single-handedly recognized many forgotten rodmakers, and made a substantial market for the many masterpieces that were too often neglected.
