I was attracted by the low price to an ebay auction for an old level silk fly line that had never been used. It was on a Montgomery Ward spool and was labeled
"Wards Supreme Quality- Japan Silk Fly Line- Level- 25 yards"

It was described as a size C, but when I looked at the photograph closely (I had to enlarge it to see the difference) I realized that it was a size G. A 3wt
rather than an 8wt making it very usable for me.

In any event, I won the auction at $34.50 (shame on me)....

Ralph beat me to it. A level silk with a furled leader creates a cross between a WF and a DT. More aggressive than a DT with the short front taper provided by
the leader only. And because of the small size differential, very applicable to light lines. Don

What you say is absolutely true..... but..... The "but" is that for lighter lines... i.e. 4wt and down you're in good shape... due to the fact
that there is so little difference in weight between a tapered front end and a level mid on say a DT. But as the line size goes up that differential becomes
greater, and thus more noticable. You can still get around the problem by the marriage of a silk furled leader and a level line. I've played that game up
