Dear all,

I am now seriously interested in Payne 204 (L).

I would like to know what kinds of fishing do the owners enjoy with this historical rod.

There are some on the web for sale, but one is described as for #4/5, another for #5 or #5/6.

Is it built not only for dry fly fishing, but also for wet fly?

Do you enjoy fishing for modest size (in Japanese standard, say, 25-35cm) trout with this rather long rod?

I appreciate any opinion.

Thank you in advance.
Thank you for all your precious comments.
I am quite happy to confirm that there do exist flyfishers enjoying wet fly and nymph fishing with Payne 204L.
And am quite horrified to see the 204L catching such a huge trout that teter hooked.
Is your Payne OK now, teter?

Hi Norimasa, I like my 204L with a 4wt. That is because it is a 16/10 with a 4/64's tiptop. I like it with dries or nymphs near the surface with a
floating DT line. It's my only Payne so I don't fish it much anymore. I built one for a customer and it ended up with my brother.I should build
myself another one. I live in Colorado so I have big water and small flies and big fish. It's the ideal rod for that situation. Tricos. Jay Edwards

Hi,

I have a 204L and I use it for my general wet fly fishing without a doubt. There is really no reason to use a heavier rod... Normally I fish a team of springer
and dropper - in the North Country Style. Upstream or "down and arcross", this rod is a pleasure to fish!

Hope this helps for your decission.

Best from Germany!
Thank you for your replies.
They seems to imply that 204L might have too fine tip section for the general wet fly fishing.
However, I understand that 204L must be a dream rod for the delicate dry fly fishing in open rivers.
How about Payne 204?

I fish my Payne 204L with a 5W (DT or WF) though some prefer 4W.
My casting style does better with a 5W. I use it for dry flies only.
Where I fish in Virginia, most trout are 13 inches or less.
It is a fantastic rod. Some say that Jim Payne himself considered his
8 1/2 foot rods his best.
The tips are very fine.

Norimasa,
My Payne 204L is a medium action 4-weight rod. I have never tried to fish wet flies with it but I think it would work. I have caught trout up to 21"
(53 cm), but I felt that was straining it a bit, and fish in the range you are speaking of are plenty of fun on a such a light rod in this length (8 1/2 feet).
