thanks to the miracles of modern technology, most any of us modern makers can build you a rod with a Martha Marie taper in just about any length and line weight you want. within reason. Just because the original was a 7'6" 6 wt doesn't mean yours has to be, tapers can be manipulated to retain (almost) the same feel in different c9onfiguratioons. Length is probably the hardest thing to alter as a good deal of a rods feel is due to it's length, a 6' rod won't...

Tom Nigro of Spring Creek rods is making a quad based on the Martha Marie taper. That's an interesting concept!

but I have a Perfectionist clone on a Tim Zietak blank
and it is simply superb with a WF-5-F.

RW Lancaster makes a nice one in 2 or 4 pce.

Handles a 5 or 6 very well.

Bob doesn't regularly build the MM model (or his version of it) because the demand is not there for a shorter 5/6, according to my discussions with him. People will fish the 275 with a 4 (or even a light 5) and 856 with a 5/6....... I think people like the MM name, but the Perfectionist is a better bet as a rod to get......Bob is still taking orders, he's just not being real commital about delivery. Pickard is a good maker and MI resident also. Just have him build his 764 with a...

If your considering an actual M.M. I would suggest going to the man that made them at the Paul Young Co. and that of course is Bob Summers. After Paul came his son Jack and while both was there in 1956 came Bob Summers who worked there until the company dissolved and Bob went on his own. I don't believe anybody could build you a M.M. as well as Bob. All the other rod makers mentioned above are excellent rod builders and could do you justice as I hate picking one rod maker over another but...

Actually it was 48 on the bank thermometer. Suppose to be between 45 and 48 all week. the olives should bust out in a couple of weeks. I'd invite you down to fish with Rolf and I but I know you won't be around.

Ken, btw I fished the Thramer 206E yesterday and christened it with 4 wild browns on olives. This was one. Nice casting rod. Thanks.

I decided to forgo the Martha Marie as what I really wanted was a gentle casting 7'6" 5wt and becasue I like my other P. Young and Bob Summers rods, I made a wrong "assumption" that a Martha Marie would be similar to them.
From all I have learned by talking with Forum Members and a Maker, the "MM" is much more a Dry Fly action and tends to be more a 6wt than a 5wt .. at least as I define things.
So, I decided to go with a "Perfectionist" 5wt...

Ken, are you looking for shorter, lighter or both? Don't forget that makers like AJ are doing lot's of stuff with hollowbuilding that may also help.

I have John's version of MM and I like it better 6-weight than 5-weight (which it should be, Pickard 765). What I truly love is the overall package (fittings, ferrules, flaming etc.). Everything matches to my eye.

i call it the martha marie perfectionist as it is a unique version of the perfectionist. came from banjos MM perf. a WF or DT 5 fits it perfectly

I just had Mike Patterson build me a MM..It will cast both a 5 and a 6..I cast it with a WF5, a Phoenix silk DT5 and a WF6. It handled them equally as well.

Contact AJ Thramer. He makes a "Martha Marie's Perfectionist" that is a 5wt. It's a terriffic casting rod, as are all of his rods. I believe AJ got the taper from one of Banjo's originals.

Since the odds of me finding a P. Young Martha Marie in good condition and without "breaking the bank" are fairly slim, do any of you have experience with current makers of "Martha Maries" that you would recommend?

Not sure if I should have posted this in the Makers section ... may put one there as well and a Moderator can advise me to cancel one or the other.
